Aristotle was unsure irrespective of whether sponges were animals, which in his method must have sensation, urge for food, and locomotion, or crops, which did not: he realized that sponges could sense contact and would deal if about to be pulled off their rocks, but that they ended up rooted like plants and under no circumstances moved about.[155]
